I kid you not, 95% of the clients who sit down in my office say the exact same thing "I'm really pretty healthy" or "I eat really well". In other words, you're sitting in my office because?? You have no issues with food, aren't moody, don't take any medication, don't get sick, don't have sleep issues, digestive issues, or weight problems, you're not highly stressed, and you're perfectly happy with your relationship with food. If this is you, congratulations! You have a happy balanced existence, and you definitely don't need a nutritionist to tell you to change something that is already working for you.
However, it is also true that 90% of these same clients are not telling me the truth, and more importantly they are not be truthful with themselves. Let's face it, we live in a society that doesn't support healthy choices. We have expectations in social settings, we are bombarded with mixed and often false health claims in the media, we are overwhelmed, we are highly stressed, and just trying to make it through our day with as little stress and as much money as possible! Who has time to think about their relationship with food? Or who the hell cares?
I do! I care, and it's my job to care. It's like being in love, if you don't have it, you don't know what your missing. When you have it, you can't imagine how you could have lived without it for so long! Having control over how you feel because you have control over how you feed your body is a powerful and addicting HEALTHY feeling. So let's take charge and start making ourselves the priority, cause everyone in your life will benefit from your being healthy.
Let's start with breaking down your day. Take the following categories of food and tally up how much you had in each category yesterday:
If you don't know what foods fall in some of these categories, that's sign #1, that you are not as healthy as you think. That's a sign of disconnect. If you have multiple tally's in the dairy and grains category and none in the vegetable and healthy fat category, that's sign #2 that you are not as healthy as you think. That's a sign of a likely highly inflammatory diet, and you need some assistance in changing your intake as you probably don't feel as awesome as you'd like to, and you just can't figure out why?! "But Greek yogurt and gluten free bread is healthy, right?" Take them out and see what happens! If you have multiple tally's in the alcohol category, you are probably not as healthy as you think. Possibly the most inflammatory thing you could do to your body on a daily, even weekly basis is drink alcohol and especially wine. "But I'm a wine connoisseur." I love that one! I don't care if you own an organic winery and grow your own organic, sustainably farmed grapes, it's not a healthy choice to be reliant or dependent on any nutrient deficient, empty calorie substance. Same goes to you Starbucks addicts :)
Now that you've tallied up your day, make a conscious effort to tip the scale of your daily diet towards whole from-the-earth foods: vegetables, animals, healthy fats. Then please remember that my sometimes sarcastic undertone is part of my personable, friendly, and I-can-relate attitude. I have done every single one of these "unhealthy" things. I have spent 10 years testing my boundaries when it comes to my relationship with food, seeing how much I can do of a "bad thing" before I break down. It's a process, like anything else in our lives we have to be conscious, aware, and persistent. Small changes are awesome, they will make a difference in the long run, but BIG changes will show you so much more about yourself. Get the courage to commit to your health, I support you!
